The suncontinues torise, but thismorning we haveallies.Hundredsof trees areour escortwhilewe shotthe riseamongthe industriouslittle townof Los Reyes (state of Michoacan, map below) andthe little villages of 18 de Marzo, LaPalmaandZacán.Over15 years,others like ushave been crossingthese forests, that voluntarilyor not,share the landwithavocadoorchardsand somepasture. The asphalthastaken its tolllineand tooka few meters,butat thenerve centeris stillthe land itselfwhichserves as acarpet,cover andsunscreen.Here weallshoteach inits way,at times wepush and other times, someone pull to us.Thepackof cyclistsis compactedor stretchedlikethe tide.Comeandenjoyshootingpainthat strikesinour thighs, wristsand fingers, whenwe gotthe saddleto climbthe step...stretchthe neck,and half-closing our eyeswhen a sunshinefinds its wayamongthe high branchesof the pinesthat linethe route.
Our musclessqueezethe maximumtorqueto continuesupporting the weight ofeffort to climband climb, inch by inch, mile by mile...untilwe left the forestand continueupa bitmore, seeingfrom far awaythe majesticTancítaro mountain (pictured here below covered with clouds...),master of the southern mountains,and his younglieutenant...Paricutin volcano.
